In an inspiring show of community support, Tronox Sands recently donated over 300 pairs of school shoes to five schools in the Empangeni and KwaBiyela area. The beneficiary schools included Nkosithandile High School, Mkhombisi High School, Dumezweni High School, Emkhandlwini Primary School, and Mabhensa Primary School.
This initiative was a result of a partnership with the Youth Professionals Network (YPN) at Tronox, aimed at supporting learners who struggle with inadequate uniforms, which can often prevent them from attending school regularly. Tronox recognizes that not having a proper school uniform—including school shoes—can greatly impact a student’s self-esteem, and hinder their ability to focus on studies.
The donation was more than just a gesture—it is part of Tronox’s broader commitment to giving back to the community and helping learners in need. By providing these essential school shoes, Tronox hopes to empower students, encouraging them to focus on their studies and strive for a brighter future. The company believes that helping students feel confident and proud of their school attire is key to fostering an environment where learners can excel and become future leaders.
The project was further enriched by the personal involvement of Mr. Prega Chinnu, the Site Director at Tronox. Mr. Chinnu visited Nkosithandile High School to speak to the students, sharing his own inspiring journey. He spoke about growing up in a disadvantaged area, facing the hardships his family endured, but emphasizing how determination and hard work helped him overcome challenges and succeed.
“I grew up in a difficult environment, but I never let that define my future,” said Mr. Chinnu. “You have the power to change your life with perseverance, no matter where you come from.” His message resonated deeply with the learners, urging them to stay focused on their studies, make the most of their opportunities, and overcome any obstacles in their path.
Mrs. W.C. Nzama, the District Director of the Department of Education at King Cetshwayo, expressed her gratitude towards Tronox for their generous contribution.
“Tronox’s donation is like planting a seed that will grow into something beautiful,” said Mrs. Nzama. “When children have the right tools to attend school, like proper uniforms and shoes, they feel confident and ready to learn. It boosts their enthusiasm and excitement about their education.”
Mrs. Nzama further emphasized that partnerships like the one with Tronox play a critical role in ensuring quality education. “We can’t do everything on our own, but with the help of partners like Tronox, we can make a real difference in the lives of our learners.”
A representative from Tronox’s Young Professionals Network also shared an empowering message with the learners at Dumezweni High School. She encouraged students to recognize their value and importance, reminding them that their teachers are there to guide them.
“Stay on the right path, follow your teachers’ guidance, and you will succeed,” she said. “And remember, treat each other with respect, no matter where you come from.”
Tronox’s school shoe donation not only provided practical support for learners but also demonstrated the company’s continued commitment to education, empowerment, and community engagement. By partnering with local schools and the Department of Education, Tronox has helped foster a positive learning environment for hundreds of students, showing that small acts of kindness can spark big changes.
With these donations, Tronox has not only invested in the future of these learners but has also set an example for other businesses to get involved and make a tangible difference in their communities.
