On Friday, the 23rd of February 2024, the University of Zululand Choir celebrated the launch of its double album, “Umkhonto-kaShaka,” and “In Collaboration With”. Media houses were invited to witness this momentous event, which took place at Umfolozi Casino. The atmosphere was incredibly relaxing, with guests thoroughly enjoying the beautiful music and performances by the UNIZUL Choir, accompanied by delightful food.
The program, skillfully directed by Thokozani Mpungose, also known as Ma Fresh from Ukhozi FM, was both engaging and well-paced. Professor Fikelephi Twani took the stage to articulate the purpose of the day, setting the tone for the celebration. Dr. Bhekani Buthelezi, the Director of the choir, not only shared that it took two years of dedicated effort to bring this exceptional work to fruition but also shed light on the conceptualization of the album, offering insight into the creative process behind its creation.
Crucial to the success of the project, the University collaborated with Dr. Lindelani Mkhize, who supervised the entire endeavor. Siyanqoba Mthethwa, Joyous Celebration’s Music Director, also lent his expertise to the project. The collaboration faced challenges in song selection and the participation of students with varying levels of experience and talent. Despite these hurdles, the common thread of a shared love for music propelled the project forward, showcasing the resilience and dedication of the choir members.
Following Dr. Buthelezi’s remarks, the media houses were given a chance to ask questions regarding this project, fostering an interactive exchange that further enriched the event. Director of the Department of Sports, Arts, and Culture, Mzobanzi Dlamini, then delivered a message of support and encouragement, emphasizing the significance of the choir’s achievement. MaMkhize Ndlovu from Ukhozi FM and Mr. Musa Ngoza from Umkhanyakude District also expressed their support for the choir’s remarkable endeavor.
The launch not only showcased the musical prowess of the University of Zululand Choir but also highlighted the collaborative efforts that made the double album, “Umkhonto-kaShaka,” and “In Collaboration With” a reality. As the audience reveled in the splendid performances, it was evident that the choir’s dedication and talent had culminated in a truly unforgettable musical experience.
