Logos Hope Ship: Bringing Hope and Enriching Lives with Knowledge to the KCDM
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

The Logos Hope, the world’s largest floating bookfair with over 5000 titles on board, arrived last Saturday, on the 20th of January 2023. Celebrating its 51st year of existence and operation since its construction in 1973, the ship has a rich history. Originally named Gustav Vasa, the vessel was constructed as a passenger car ferry, operating North Atlantic routes.

In 1983, the ship changed hands to the Smyril Line, was renamed Norröna, and commenced shuttle services between the Faroe Islands and Denmark. In 2004, GBA Ships (Good Books for All) successfully raised funds to acquire Norröna as a replacement vessel for Logos II. The ship underwent a comprehensive renovation for its new role as the ‘book ship’ and was renamed Logos Hope.

The word “Logos” is of Greek origin and is traditionally translated as ‘word,’ thought,’ ‘principle,’ or ‘speech.’ This name encapsulates the ship’s mission to bring knowledge and hope through the word of God and various literary works.

Today, the Honourable Mayor of Mhlathuze Municipality, Mr. Xolani Ngwezi, along with the Mayor of King Cetshwayo District Municipality, Mr. A.T. Ntuli, welcomed the Logos Hope in the City of Mhlathuze. Distinguished guests in attendance included Apostle Dlomo of CFCI, along with his wife, Bishop Zikali of Life Abundance Church, KCDM Mayor and Deputy Mayor, City of Umhlathuze Mayor and Deputy Mayor, Iziko Local traditional dancers, representatives from local churches, Transnet, and various local organizations.

Mr. Edward David, the Ship Director, expressed in his speech that the Logos Ship aims to bring hope to people, emphasizing the significance of hope in preventing people from perishing. He added that the term “Logos” means the word of God. One of the ship’s objectives is to spread the word of God and support countries where worship is restricted, especially for followers of Lord Jesus Christ. Mr. David also mentioned their intention to include local language books on the ship to learn more about the local culture.

During his speech, Honourable Mayor Mr. A.T. Ntuli expressed his honor at the Logos Ship gracing the King Cetshwayo District Municipality with its presence. He acknowledged the ship’s 51 years of existence as 51 years of knowledge. Mayor Ntuli commended the ship’s crew members for their voluntary service worldwide and encouraged the promotion of a reading culture among children.

The Logos Ship launch was a great success, attracting numerous visitors who explored the vessel, fostering a culture of learning and enriching lives with knowledge. City of uMhlathuze Mayor Cllr Xolani Ngwezi, along with KCDM Mayor Cllr Thami Ntuli, officially received the world’s largest floating book fair vessel, MV Logos Hope, at the shores of Richards Bay Small Craft Harbour.

The 132m long ship has sailed to 150 countries worldwide and has welcomed over 40 million visitors over the years. Currently housing 350 crew members from 60 different countries and nationalities, the Logos Hope offers visitors a selection of over 5000 titles for the whole family across a wide range of categories. The ship will be in Richards Bay for three weeks, departing on the 19th of February.

During the event, crew members from different nationalities were given an opportunity to share with the guests how long they have been with the ship and what roles they perform on board.

The Logos Hope crew showcased their dancing talents to entertain the guests.

Additionally, Iziko Traditional Dancers entertained the audience with captivating traditional dances.

City of uMhlathuze Mayor Cllr Xolani Ngwezi encourages schools, families, and various organizations to visit the vessel during its stay in the city.
