In a significant stride towards combating the pervasive issue of women and children abuse, the Mthonjaneni Municipality organized a march on the 23rd of February 2024 in Melmoth. Led by Mthonjaneni Municipality Mayor Mr. Mbangiseni Biyela and Inkatha Freedom Party President Mr. V.F Hlabisa, the march aimed to raise awareness and rally community support against this pressing social problem.
The march, which commenced from the R66 road and concluded at the Mthonjaneni Swimming Pool, marked a pivotal moment in the municipality’s commitment to addressing the longstanding issue of abuse. The culminating event at the swimming pool included its official reopening, presided over by Mr. V.F Hlabisa and Mr. Mbangiseni Biyela.
During the reopening ceremony, Mayor Biyela highlighted the historical significance of the pool, recounting its unfortunate legacy during the Apartheid era when black individuals were denied access. He expressed the municipality’s dedication to continuous improvement, emphasizing that the renovation was an ongoing process, with more enhancements planned for the future.
“This pool has a history. During the Apartheid era, no blacks were allowed to access it. As the municipality, we have revamped the pool and will continue to renovate. This is not the final product,” Mayor Biyela stated. He further underlined the potential of the swimming pool to contribute to the development of Mthonjaneni’s youth by providing them with the opportunity to engage in swimming as a sport.
In an interview, Mr. V.F Hlabisa, the President of the Inkatha Freedom Party, expressed his delight at witnessing a united front against the abuse of women and children. He used the platform to call on the government to take decisive action against those responsible for such heinous acts. “We urge the government to deal with the culprits who abuse and murder women and children,” he emphasized. Mr. Hlabisa affirmed the Inkatha Freedom Party’s unwavering commitment to supporting programs and initiatives dedicated to eradicating abuse.
The joint efforts of the Mthonjaneni Municipality and the Inkatha Freedom Party showcase a community taking proactive steps to address societal issues. Through initiatives like the march and the reopening of the swimming pool, they aim to foster a safer environment and promote positive change in the lives of women, children, and the entire community of Melmoth.
