The sun, sand, and sheer determination set the stage for a groundbreaking moment in South African wrestling history on the 22nd of March 2025 as the South African Wrestling Federation (SAWF) hosted its first-ever Beach Wrestling Championship at Alkantstrand Beach, Richards Bay.
The energy was electric as wrestlers from across the country gathered to compete in this thrilling new chapter for the sport. But the action didn’t just start on competition day—on March 21, anticipation built as respected coach Willem Giliomee led an exclusive wrestling clinic for coaches and referees, ensuring they were fully prepared for the high-intensity matches ahead.
When the big day arrived, the beach was transformed into a battleground of skill, strength, and strategy. With participants ranging from 8 to 60 years old, the championship welcomed athletes of all experience levels, proving that wrestling is a sport for all. A staggering 200 matches took place throughout the day, with competitors putting on an awe-inspiring display of technique and resilience under the open sky.
Spectators lined the sandy arena, cheering on their favourites as wrestlers grappled in the unique beach setting. The championship wasn’t just about competition—it was about passion, sportsmanship, and the celebration of wrestling in a fresh, exciting way.
With the overwhelming success of this historic event, the future of beach wrestling in South Africa looks brighter than ever. The SAWF has set the bar high, and if this year’s championship is anything to go by, wrestling fans can look forward to an even bigger and better event in the years to come.
Could this be the start of a new wrestling tradition in South Africa? If the roaring energy at Alkantstrand Beach was any indication, the answer is a resounding YES!
