In response to the growing concerns surrounding truck movement in the John Ross area, encompassing Richards Bay and Mpangeni, Mayor Mhlonisha X Ngwezi of Mhlathuze Municipality has clarified the steps being taken to alleviate the associated disruptions, particularly during nighttime.
One of the major challenges highlighted by the Mayor is the disturbance caused by trucks on the roads, impacting both traffic flow and the overall security of the region. To counteract this, the council has committed to deploying personnel working overtime to ensure the smooth operation of traffic and safeguard the local economy.
Mayor Ngwezi emphasized the crucial role of the Port of Richards Bay in the economic landscape. Expressing concern over its underutilization, he urged the Department of State Owned Enterprises to take legal measures to renew essential infrastructure.
Addressing the issue of trucks designed for off-road usage, the Mayor noted that their presence on the roads contributes to traffic congestion. Consequently, the council has devised strategies to manage traffic effectively, albeit incurring significant costs. The municipality remains committed to monitoring and addressing the situation until a comprehensive solution is implemented.
Mayor X Ngwezi expressed dissatisfaction with the allocation of funds, stating that the resources provided were insufficient to meet the numerous demands. Notably, he informed Transnet and the Department of Traffic in KZN about the necessary measures required to rectify the situation.
Concluding his statement, Mayor X Ngwezi highlighted the critical nature of resolving the truck movement issue. He affirmed that if responsible entities fail to take action, the council will continue its efforts, even if it necessitates exceeding legal boundaries. The Mayor emphasized that public safety and accessibility to essential services in Mhlathuze must not be compromised.
The municipality remains dedicated to finding a lasting solution to ensure the seamless movement of goods and people while simultaneously addressing the economic and infrastructural challenges posed by the current truck-related issues.
