The University of Zululand’s Media Society, in collaboration with lecturers from the Faculty of Communication Science, successfully hosted a Media Expo on the 12th of September at the university. The event aimed to encourage media and public relations students to take their studies seriously while exposing them to a variety of career opportunities available in their fields.
The expo featured a lineup of influential guest speakers, who offered insights into the media industry and practical advice for the students in attendance. One of the key speakers was Mr. Carl Modise, Chairperson of North Coast Radio 104.0 FM. He emphasized the importance of mastering the English language, which he noted as crucial for success in professional environments globally. Mr. Modise also urged students to be passionate about the media industry, explaining that such passion would propel them forward in their careers.
Another notable speaker was Miss Thando Ndaba, Public Relations Officer for the King Cetshwayo District Municipality. Miss Ndaba advised students to utilize their social media platforms as a tool to showcase their expertise and personal brand. She stressed the importance of curating professional and authentic social media profiles, as employers often evaluate candidates through their online presence before making hiring decisions. She reminded the students that their online personas should reflect the kind of professionals they aspire to become.
In addition, the students were inspired by a former alumna, Amkelo Zulu, who is now the Head of News at North Coast Radio. Amkelo Zulu shared her journey from being a student at the university to achieving her current role in the media industry, offering invaluable insights and encouragement to her fellow aspiring media professionals.
The presence of the Media Society’s secretaries and Heads of Departments (HODs) added to the event’s significance. Together with the lecturers, they shared their knowledge, experiences, and advice with students, reiterating the importance of hard work, dedication, and representing the media and public relations fields with pride.
Overall, the Media and Public Relations Expo provided students with inspiration, guidance, and motivation to excel in their studies and pursue their dreams in the dynamic and ever-evolving world of media.
