In light of the prevailing prevalence of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in our society, North Coast Radio has taken a proactive stance during the 16 Days of Activism by initiating discussions aimed at understanding, identifying, and addressing this critical issue.
To shed light on this complex subject, North Coast Radio engaged Mrs. Qhawekazi Myeza, a Life Coach, Counsellor, and passionate advocate for the spiritual, emotional, and psychological well-being of individuals from diverse backgrounds. In an insightful discussion, Mrs. Myeza delved into the multifaceted nature of GBV, highlighting various contributing factors.
According to Mrs. Myeza, several underlying factors contribute to the perpetuation of GBV. These include the failure to take responsibility for one’s actions, the inability to cope with rejection, and carrying unresolved emotional baggage from past relationships into new ones. Addressing these issues early on in relationships, she stressed, is crucial to mitigate conflicts that may escalate into instances of GBV.
A significant emphasis was placed on the necessity of open and transparent discussions within relationships to establish mutual expectations. Often, conflicts arise due to uncommunicated or mismatched expectations between partners, leading to tensions that can escalate into violence.
Mrs. Myeza underscored the importance of inclusive dialogues within society to redefine the scope of GBV, dispelling the misconception that it exclusively affects women and children. Recognizing the societal norms that discourage men from expressing their emotions, she urged for more open conversations to provide an outlet for emotions, potentially averting violent outbursts.
Moreover, the conversation highlighted the societal pressures that silence victims of GBV, especially when the perpetrator is a primary breadwinner. Fear of judgment and societal stigmatization often force victims into silence, exacerbating their suffering.

As the 16 Days of Activism continue, the dialogue initiated by North Coast Radio encourages a broader societal conversation to redefine and address the underlying causes of GBV. It advocates for inclusivity, understanding, and support systems aimed at creating a safer environment for all individuals affected by this pervasive issue.
