The Port of Richards Bay embraced the commencement of the cruise season with the inaugural docking of the MS SH Diana, marking the advent of an exciting chapter. The vessel, a newly constructed marvel, hosted its maiden voyage, accommodating up to 250 passengers and boasting a crew of 200 members.
The arrival of this cruise ship in Richards Bay holds profound significance for the city’s economy, illuminating the pivotal role of tourism in its growth trajectory. The impact cascades across various local businesses, extending even to smaller enterprises. Notably, vendors lined the shores where the ship berthed, showcasing their wares as captivating mementos for visiting tourists. In a candid interview, a vendor revealed that the earnings from such opportunities had supported the education of four family members—his wife and three daughters, all the way through university. This personal narrative stands testament to the transformative potential brought forth by the arrival of cruise ships.
Dennis Mqadi, the Port Manager, expressed optimism, affirming that the docking of SH Diana sets the stage for what promises to be a vibrant and successful season. Anticipation simmered as Mqadi looked ahead to 2026/2027 when the infrastructure would accommodate even larger vessels.
Amid the festivities, Deputy Mayor Cllr Christo Botha, although momentarily diverted by an emergency at the Council chamber, conveyed his sentiments through a speech read by Port Manager Mr. Mqadi. Botha commended the Port of Richards Bay for fostering global connections and emphasized the manifold benefits accrued from the influx of cruise ships. He portrayed Richards Bay not merely as a city but as a dynamic nexus pulsating with potential—an arena where cultures converge and ideas flourish.
The event drew a distinguished assembly, including Ms. Vanessa Ncobela from the Zululand Chamber, representatives from various businesses, academia, and Umfolozi Tvet College. Their presence underscored the strategic position of the port in connecting people and communities. Notably, Richards Bay, once a fishing hub, has blossomed into a multifaceted industrial center owing much to the Port of Richards Bay’s expansive growth.
Captain of the Vessel MS SH Diana took the stage, lauding the port’s efficiency. The ship, a proud ambassador of a five-star company, embarked on its maiden voyage on April 1, 2023, and now, at six months old, voyages toward Argentina. The captain commended the swift arrangements made by the port—guests disembarked seamlessly within 20 minutes of the ship’s arrival, aligning perfectly with their company’s ethos of providing a seamless guest experience.
