The Church of the Holy Ghost, founded in 1916 by UMqalisi Paulos Mfunwa Nzuza, eagerly anticipates its annual conference in March to commemorate the historic downpour of the Holy Spirit in 1917. Reverend Kunene, under the guidance of Archbishop Nzuza, recently visited our studios to share details about the upcoming event, emphasizing this year’s theme, “STAND(YIMA),” based on 1 Corinthians 15:58. In addition to the conference details and the founder’s spiritual calling, it is crucial to recognize UMqalisi as the visionary behind the Church.
UMqalisi, meaning “The Founder” in isiZulu, is a revered title bestowed upon Paulos Mfunwa Nzuza. The Church of the Holy Ghost traces its origins to the divine encounter UMqalisi had while praying under a tree outside his home on the 9th of May 1916. During this profound moment, a celestial voice summoned him, leading to the establishment of the Church. You can catch the snippets of the live interview here:
Gathering around UMqalisi in response to his spiritual calling, followers received the gift of the Holy Spirit on the 17th of June 1917. This transformative event marked the official inception of the Church of the Holy Ghost. The downpour of the Holy Spirit became a defining moment, mirroring the Pentecost in the early Christian Church.
Reverend Kunene announced that the annual conference, scheduled from the 4th to the 10th of March 2024, will be held at City Hill Church in Hillcrest for the first six days and conclude at the Durban ICC on the 10th. The seven-day conference includes a 21-day period of fasting and prayer, a tradition reflecting the commitment of the Church to spiritual preparation.
Livestream Option and Conference Theme:
Recognizing the challenges of physical attendance, the Church will livestream the entire event on its YouTube channel. This inclusive approach allows a broader audience, regardless of geographical location, to connect with the spiritual experience. The conference theme, “STAND(YIMA),” based on 1 Corinthians 15:58, invites participants to stand firm in their faith and unwavering commitment to the work of the Lord.
