The recent KwaZulu-Natal SALGA Games 2023, hosted in the vibrant City of Mhlathuze under the King Cetshwayo District, saw remarkable success, as highlighted by Honourable Mr. A.T Ntuli, the Chairperson of the event. In his address, Mr. Ntuli acknowledged the pivotal role played by investors, emphasizing that their support was instrumental in turning this ambitious vision into a reality.
“With sincere gratitude to our investors, the KwaZulu-Natal SALGA Games 2023 achieved tremendous success,” Mr. Ntuli stated. “Their contributions were vital in ensuring that this grand event unfolded seamlessly.”
Undoubtedly, the resounding success of the games was evident in various aspects. The attendance surpassed expectations, with accommodations in the City of Mhlathuze fully booked. Overflowing enthusiasm even led some attendees to seek lodgings in nearby areas like Ethekwini and Ballito, showcasing the magnitude of interest and participation in the event.
Moreover, the positive impact rippled through local economies, benefiting numerous small businesses. The influx of visitors created opportunities for these enterprises to thrive, reflecting a boost in economic activity and local commerce attributed to the games.
Mr. A.T Ntuli revealed another significant achievement—the selection of approximately 15 players to advance to a professional level, signaling not only the success of the event but also the promising talent that emerged from the competition.
However, amidst the triumph, the games encountered hurdles and setbacks. Despite the event’s magnitude, three District Municipalities faced challenges attending. Honourable Mayor Mr. A.T Ntuli expressed regret over uThugela and Majuba Districts’ absence due to financial constraints. Harry Gwala District’s non-attendance remains uncertain, adding to the complexities faced by organizers.
One of the primary obstacles was the unexpected withdrawal of funds by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Sport, disrupting the event’s financial stability. The King Cetshwayo District Municipality, in collaboration with private investors such as Aquel, Icebolethu, and others, stepped in to support and fund the games, ensuring their continuation and success.
“The hurdles were immense, but our collective dedication and support from private investors helped us overcome them,” Mr. Ntuli affirmed. “The spirit of collaboration prevailed, underscoring the resilience and determination of our communities.”
The KwaZulu-Natal SALGA Games 2023, despite facing challenges, stand as a testament to resilience, unity, and the indomitable spirit of sport. The event not only showcased athletic talent but also highlighted the importance of community support and collaboration in overcoming adversity.
