His primary aim was to officially open and assess the progress made by the team in repairing the damage caused by previous rains. The beach had suffered soil erosion, rendering it unsafe for public use. The exposed edges posed significant danger. Assured by the dedicated Transnet team working on repairs, the Mayor ensured that Alkantstrand Beach would be safe for holidaymakers and the Richards Bay Community. Subsequently, Mayor Ngwezi officiated the reopening of Alkantstrand Beach, emphasizing the importance of heeding lifeguard warnings due to their invaluable expertise.
The enthusiasm extended beyond locals, reaching tourists from Pretoria who were ecstatic witnessing the restoration efforts. Mayor Councilor Xolani Ngwezi, along with Municipality Manager Mr. Nkosenye Zulu, beach manager Mthokozisi Cele, and Mhlathuze councilors, attended the event. While ongoing maintenance persists, a significant portion of the beach has been reopened to the public, especially during the festive holidays.
During their visit, Beach Manager Mthokozisi Cele briefed Mayor Xolani Ngwezi and Municipal Manager Mr. Zulu on the operations of the lifeguards, explaining their rescue procedures and the essential tools required to fulfill their duties effectively.
To ensure heightened safety during this busy period, additional security guards have been stationed at the beach, further fortifying the measures already in place by the dedicated lifeguard team.
