During an oversight visit to the Mtunzini Waste Water Treatment Plant, Cllr Francois Rogers, the Democratic Alliance’s Caucus Leader in KwaZulu-Natal, voiced deep concern over the damage to the plant. Responsible for servicing crucial facilities like the police station and correctional center, the sanitation system at Mtunzini has been inactive since 2019. Rogers emphasized the environmental impact of this malfunction, warning of potential damage to the ocean.
Initially attributing responsibility to the District, Cllr Rogers later discovered that the Mtunzini Waste Water Treatment Plant falls under the jurisdiction of public works. With a commitment to addressing the issue, he plans to engage with public works officials, urging them to take swift action in restoring the functionality of the treatment plant.
Mr. Phumlani Zulu, the supervisor of the Mtunzini Waste Water Treatment Plant, shed light on the challenges faced by the facility. The deterioration of valves and biofilters has impeded the proper functioning of the plant, leading to concerns of air and water pollution in Mtunzini. Recognizing the urgency of the matter, Zulu stressed the importance of resolving these issues promptly.
