The North Coast Radio (NCR) joined forces with students from Aquadene Dramatic Arts, initiating the 16+ Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence. Together, they embarked on a proactive campaign to combat the prevailing femicide crisis in South Africa.
Within the nation, the pervasive issue of femicide relentlessly claims the lives of women across all age brackets. This distressing reality often disrupts the aspirations of young women sent to universities, tragically cut short by senseless acts of violence at the hands of their partners. The anguish experienced by parents due to these heartrending losses is both frequent and profound.
The root causes behind these tragic occurrences point toward the vulnerability of young girls navigating unfamiliar and challenging circumstances away from the security of their parental guidance. Often, these girls become reliant on their partners, leading to situations of dependency and subsequent abuse, culminating tragically in their demise.
Mrs. Ncanana, an inspiring Dramatic Arts Teacher at Aquadene High School, took decisive action to empower young girls at the high school level. Her dedication was evident in the “What Men Can Do I Can Do Better” initiative, a poignant movement aimed at instilling within these students the belief that as young women, they possess inherent strength and capability. The overarching goal extends beyond high school walls, aspiring to permeate various educational institutions, including universities.
The impetus for this movement stemmed from alarmingly high rates of teenage pregnancy, serving as a catalyst for their commitment to empower young girls. Central to their mission is the enlightenment of these young individuals about their intrinsic worth, emphasizing self-validation over seeking external affirmation.
The interview titled “What Men Can Do I Can Do Better” encapsulated the collective voice of these young girls, illuminating their shared determination and aspirations. Mrs. Ncanana provided insights into the urgent need for such initiatives in society, fostering a culture of empowerment and resilience.
The collaboration between North Coast Radio and the proactive Aquadene Dramatic Arts students stands as a beacon of hope in the fight against gender-based violence. Our collective effort signifies a commitment to empower young women, fostering a future where they recognize their inherent strength and worth, unencumbered by societal constraints.
