On Saturday, 17th February, RBM marked a significant milestone with the successful hosting of its first annual Half Marathon and Fun Walk. The event showcased a diverse range of activities, featuring competitive races like the 21km and 10km runs, alongside a spirited 5km fun walk. This initiative speaks volumes about RBM’s commitment to extending its impact beyond the mining realm.
The event not only highlighted the athletic prowess of participants but also emphasized the remarkable spirit of unity, as individuals from various walks of life came together to support and cheer each other across the finish line. Heartfelt congratulations are extended to all the runners and walkers who accomplished this remarkable feat.
Participants traveled from as far as Lesotho to join the event, and local teams, including the Ward 2 Sport Committee and Umhlathuze Athletics Club, added to the vibrant atmosphere. The diverse turnout, consisting of people of all ages, showcased the inclusive nature of the event.
Adding to the excitement, Malineo Mahloko from Lesotho secured the first position in the 10km run, walking away with a prize money of R8000.00. Blandina Makatsi, also from Lesotho, triumphed in the 21km run, earning a prize of R12000.00.
Following the run/walk, participants enjoyed a rejuvenating stretching session with lively aerobics led by Malwande from Esikhaleni. The post-event ambiance was enhanced by music, with attendees having a great time dancing. This lively atmosphere underscored RBM’s dedication to more than just mining; it reflected a genuine concern for the communities they operate in, staying true to their core values of Care, Courage, and Curiosity.
